Hogg Foundation for Mental Health

Hogg Foundation for Mental Health advances mental wellness for the people of Texas as an impactful grantmaker and catalyst for change. Founded in 1940 by the children of Texas governor James S. Hogg, the foundation is housed within the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at The University of Texas at Austin.

As a young girl, Miss Ima Hogg toured Texas state hospitals, schools, and prisons with her father, Governor James Hogg. Those experiences inspired her lifelong interest in psychology and mental health. After her older brother Will died in 1930, she and younger brother Mike used proceeds from Will’s estate to establish the Hogg Foundation for Mental Hygiene at the University in his memory. Miss Ima later established a separate endowment at the foundation to fund mental health services for children, youth, and their families in Houston and Harris County. Other benefactors have also created endowments at the foundation to support its mission.

Since 1940, the foundation’s work has honored the Hogg family’s legacy of public service and dedication to improving mental health by dispersing millions of dollars from foundation funds to promote mental health services, policy, research, and education in Texas. Today the foundation focuses its grant making in strategic areas and awards grants through a competitive proposal process. The foundation also awards scholarships and fellowships to graduate students in mental health–related fields.
