University Health Services

University Health Services (UHS), located in the Student Services Building, is a fully accredited ambulatory healthcare facility. It provides medical services primarily for currently enrolled students, but also provides travel health and physical therapy services for University faculty and staff and certain services for some nonstudents who are officially enrolled in particular University programs. University Health Services also provides public health leadership and initiatives, including the promotion of a healthy campus.

The medical staff includes board-certified physicians (family medicine, internal medicine, and sports medicine), nurse practitioners (family or women's health), physician assistants, physical therapists, and a registered dietitian. University Health Services has its own laboratory and X-ray facilities.

For non-urgent health concerns, students are required to schedule appointments by calling (512) 471-4955 between 8 am and 5 pm on weekdays. Students can also schedule many types of appointments online . Students who need prompt medical attention, as determined by University Health Services clinical staff, may be seen in the Urgent Care Clinic. The Urgent Care Clinic is open from 8 am until 5:30 pm Monday through Friday and from 11 am until 3 pm on Saturdays during the long session. Operating hours for summer, holidays, and between semesters are posted on the University Health Services Web site .

Students with medical emergencies should go directly to an emergency facility or call 911.

The Nurse Advice Line, (512) 475-NURS (6877), is available every day, twenty-four hours a day, to offer students advice about illness or injury. Students who need medical treatment when University Health Services is closed must go to a healthcare facility in the community and are responsible for any charges incurred.

Health promotion, a part of University Health Services, helps students get and stay healthy. Its programs and services foster students' academic and personal success through the promotion of healthy behaviors and a healthy campus. Programs and initiatives cover a range of topics, including alcohol and drugs, healthy sexuality, healthy eating, stress management, sleep, and general health. Audiovisual and printed materials on a variety of health topics are available at no charge to University students at the Health Promotion Lending Library (SSB 1.106), (512) 475-8252.

There are charges associated with University Health Services clinic visits. Charges are generally lower than those for comparable services in the community. A charge applies for missed appointments or appointments not cancelled at least two hours in advance (twenty-four hours in advance for appointments with a registered dietitian or for physical therapy). Students sometimes are affected by medical conditions beyond the scope of services offered by University Health Services. Payment for services at other healthcare facilities is the sole responsibility of the student; therefore, every student is encouraged to purchase student health insurance or to have sufficient insurance coverage under an existing policy. Additional information about the student health insurance plan can be found through the UHS Web site .

Students do not have to have health insurance to use University Health Services; however, University Health Services can file claims with most health insurance plans. For more information, including types of plans with which claims cannot be filed, go to the UHS Web site .

By providing their insurance information, students are authorizing University Health Services to file a claim with (send a bill to) the student's insurance company for services rendered. Students who do not want an insurance claim to be filed must let University Health Services know by 11:59 pm on the day of their visit by contacting the Cashier/Insurance Office during regular business hours or logging on to My UHS online to send a secure message.

A student's insurance company may determine that some or all of the charges incurred at UHS are not covered by their insurance policy. The student is responsible to learn what their insurance covers.

For students who do not have health insurance and cannot pay at the time of service or who have health insurance that does not pay for any part of their charges, University Health Services will post their charges to "What I Owe." Students who do not have insurance or who do not use their insurance at University Health Services will receive a self-pay discount for charges incurred.

University Health Services healthcare providers do not provide written excuses for patients who miss classes or assignment deadlines due to illness. Any accommodations for absences or missed deadlines are strictly between the student and the instructor. Students may request a Visit Verification Form at the time of a visit to University Health Services. The form verifies only the date and time of the visit. It provides no information about the reason for the visit. A student with special medical circumstances may apply to Services for Students with Disabilities for a letter to the appropriate authority on the student’s behalf to request a course load reduction, medical withdrawal, or other accommodation.
