Asian Cultures and Languages
The Bachelor of Arts with a major in Asian cultures and languages is offered with specialization in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi/Urdu, Malayalam, Sanskrit, or Tamil.
Major
24 semester hours, including 21 hours of upper-division coursework, in the language and culture of one of the following areas of specialization. A list of approved Asian studies courses related to the areas of specialization is available in the Department of Asian Studies. NOTE: 24 semester hours, including 18 hours of upper-division coursework, are required for the specialization in Japanese.
- Chinese
- Chinese 322 or 341
- Three semester hours chosen from Chinese 320L, 330, and 340
- Six additional semester hours of upper-division coursework in Chinese
- 12 additional semester hours in Asian studies courses related to China, at least six hours of which must be upper-division
- Japanese
- Japanese 317C
- Japanese 320K and 320L
- Japanese 330
- Three additional semester credit hours of upper-division coursework in Japanese
- Nine additional semester credit hours in Asian studies courses related to Japan, at least six hours of which must be upper-division
- Korean
- Asian Studies 302D
- 12 semester hours of upper-division coursework in Korean
- Nine additional upper-division semester hours in Asian studies courses related to Korea
- Hindi/Urdu
- 12 semester hours of upper-division coursework in Hindi and/or Urdu
- 12 additional semester hours in Asian studies courses related to South Asia, at least six hours of which must be upper-division. Three semester hours of upper-division coursework in Hindi, Urdu, or Sanskrit may be counted toward this requirement.
- Malayalam
- 12 semester hours of upper-division coursework in Malayalam
- 12 additional semester hours in Asian studies courses related to South Asia, at least six hours of which must be upper-division. Three semester hours of upper-division coursework in Malayalam, Sanskrit, or Tamil may be counted toward this requirement.
- Sanskrit
- 12 semester hours of upper-division coursework in Sanskrit
- 12 additional semester hours in Asian studies courses related to South Asia, six hours of which must be upper-division. Three semester hours of upper-division coursework in Sanskrit, Hindi, or Urdu may be counted toward this requirement.
