Classical Studies
Major
36 semester hours of coursework, at least 21 of which must be upper-division, in one of the two areas of specialization, ancient history or classical archaeology, listed below. Coursework counted toward the foreign language requirement may not also be counted toward the major.
- Ancient History
- Six hours of premodern history, chosen from topics of Ancient History and Classical Civilization 310 and 330.
- Nine hours of upper-division Greek and/or Roman history, chosen from topics of Ancient History and Classical Civilization 325.
- 12 hours of classical civilization, Greek, Latin, or topics of Ancient History and Classical Civilization 319, 325, and 378.
- Six hours of upper-division coursework in Greek and/or Latin.
- Ancient History and Classical Civilization 378.
- Classical Archaeology
- Nine hours of coursework in classical archaeology chosen from Classical Civilization 307C, 307D, or 307K; 317 and 340.
- Three hours of approved coursework in archaeological techniques and analysis. A list of approved courses is available in the Department of Classics.
- Three hours of upper-division coursework in Greek or Roman history, chosen from topics of Ancient History and Classical Civilization 325 and 378.
- Three hours of upper-division coursework in ancient art history, chosen from Art History 325, 326N, 327N, 327P, 327R, and 362.
- Six hours of upper-division coursework in either Greek or Latin.
- 12 additional hours of coursework chosen from Anthropology 304, approved topics of Middle Eastern Studies 342, Religious Studies 354D, and the areas listed in requirements (2a) through (2e).
- Fieldwork experience approved by the classical studies faculty adviser.
