German, Scandinavian, and Dutch Studies

Major 

Twenty-seven semester hours of coursework in German Scandinavian, and Dutch studies, including: 

  1. German, Scandinavian, and Dutch Studies 301 
  1. One tools course: language for research 
    1. One upper-division course in the same Germanic language used to fulfill the foreign-language requirement (usually German 328 or Norwegian 328); or
    2. One language course in a second modern Germanic language (usually 604 or the equivalent); or
    3. One course in an older Germanic language (Old Norse, Middle-High German, Gothic, etc.) 
  2. One foundations course out of three areas: film studies, narrative/textual studies, or linguistics that stresses methodology/theory as well as content areas, chosen from an approved list
  1. Five additional German, Scandinavian, and Dutch studies courses 
    1. Only one course may be lower-division 
    2. Additional foundations courses may be used to fill this requirement 
    3. Upper-division German courses may be substituted for up to three of the five German, Scandinavian, and Dutch studies courses; German 328 may not be used to fulfill this requirement
    4. Other substitutions may be approved by the German, Scandinavian, and Dutch studies adviser.
