Classical Studies

Major

Thirty-six semester hours of coursework, at least twenty-one of which must be upper-division, in one of the two areas of specialization, ancient history or classical archaeology, listed below. Coursework counted toward the foreign language requirement may not also be counted toward the major. 

1. Ancient History 
   1. Six hours of premodern history, chosen from topics of Ancient History and Classical Civilization 310 and 330.
   2. Nine hours of upper-division Greek and/or Roman history, chosen from topics of Ancient History and Classical Civilization 325. 
   3. Twelve hours of classical civilization, Greek, Latin, or topics of Ancient History and Classical Civilization 319, 325, and 378. 
   4. Six hours of upper-division coursework in Greek and/or Latin. 
   5. Ancient History and Classical Civilization 378.
2. Classical Archaeology 
   1. Nine hours of coursework in classical archaeology chosen from Classical Civilization 307C, 307D, or 307K; 317 and 340. 
   2. Three hours of approved coursework in archaeological techniques and analysis. A list of approved courses is available in the Department of Classics. 
   3. Three hours of upper-division coursework in Greek or Roman history, chosen from topics of Ancient History and Classical Civilization 325 and 378. 
   4. Three hours of upper-division coursework in ancient art history, chosen from Art History 325, 326N, 327N, 327P, 327R, and 362. 
   5. Six hours of upper-division coursework in either Greek or Latin. 
   6. Twelve additional hours of coursework chosen from Anthropology 304, approved topics of Middle Eastern Studies 342, Religious Studies 354D, and the areas listed in requirements (2a) through (2e). 
   7. Fieldwork experience approved by the classical studies faculty adviser.
