Digital Badging Initiative

The Digital Badging Initiative allows colleges, schools, and units to offer non-transcriptable, not-for-credit recognition of a student’s academic accomplishments. Digital badges (or microcredentials) signify the smaller academic achievements of a learner or student. Digital badges may represent work that a learner has participated in (completion badge), or a skill that they have demonstrated and been assessed on (competency badge).

Completion Badges

A completion badge is a digital record that acknowledges a learner’s completion of an assignment, training, or other activity. These offerings require participation of a minimum of four contact hours.

Competency Badges

A competency badge is a digital record that acknowledges the assessed mastery of knowledge, skills and/or abilities in a given context. These badges have associated learning outcomes, assessment, and rubrics.
