Examines the complex histories, intellectual entanglements, and enduring hierarchies of Africa and African studies. Explores the evolution of African studies (both intellectually and institutionally), particularly in regards to the emergence of black studies. African and African Diaspora Studies 304 and 317C (Topic: Introduction to the Study of Africa) may not both be counted. Three lecture hours a week for one semester.
