Examines the gendered experience of chattel slavery in the United States. Includes critical analysis of classic and contemporary texts, films, and songs that focus on slave labor, family, community, sexuality, and the economy. Only one of the following may be counted: African and African Diaspora Studies 350V, 372C (Topic 4), History 350R (Topic 14), Women's and Gender Studies 345 (Topic 31). Three lecture hours a week for one semester.
