Study European-indigenous encounters in Mesoamerica, a geographic and cultural area spanning north-central Mexico through western Honduras, between approximately 1450-1750. Examine strategies of contact, accommodation, and resistance that indigenous communities and European colonizers used to communicate with each other and negotiate the conduct of daily life in colonial society. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Only one of the following may be counted: Anthropology 323T, History 346E, Latin American Studies 322M, Religious Studies 361 (Topic: Mesoamerican Encounters), 366M.
