Explore common biological responses elicited by biomaterials and the impact of these responses on material performance. Emphasis on key challenges in the development and assessment of biomaterials used in medical devices. Includes material surface properties, modification, and characterization; protein/cell interactions with materials; biocompatibility, inflammation and wound healing, cell-mediated biodegradation of materials; thrombosis, infection and calcification of medical devices. Biomedical Engineering 364 and 377T (Topic: Biol Responses to Medical Dev) may not both be counted. Three lecture hours a week for one semester.
