Introduction to structural and physical properties of materials and synthetic strategies for making new materials in the nanoscale and mesoscale regimes, in addition to covering instrumental methods used to probe materials properties. Some aspects of applications (semiconductor devices, solar and fuel cells, smart and responsive materials) will be covered to illustrate the kinds of material properties that need to be considered in designing novel materials of specific function.
