The prose writer as artist and sage in the cultural, political, religious, and scientific controversies that influence the modern tradition. Representative writers: Carlyle, Mill, Newman, Arnold, Darwin. Three lecture hours a week for one semester.
Pre/Corequisites: One of the following: Comparative Literature 315, English 303D, 316L, 316M, 316N, 316P, or Tutorial Course 303D.
