Introduction to important topics in the history of Northern Europe's culture, including areas from history, the arts, film studies, language and linguistics, and literature. Only one of the following may be counted unless the topics vary: German, Scandinavian, and Dutch Studies 310, Germanic Civilization 301, and Scandinavian 302. Three lecture hours a week for one semester.

Topic 1: American Jews: The Yiddish Experience. Focuses on over a century of Yiddish-based contributions to American literature, music, and film, including works by Isaac Bashevis Singer, Michael Chabon, Woody Allen, and the Marx Brothers. Only one of the following may be counted: American Studies 315 (Topic 4), 315 (Topic 6); German, Scandinavian, and Dutch Studies 310 (Topic 1); Jewish Studies 311 (Topic 6), 311 (Topic 9); Religious Studies 313 (Topic 1), 316K (Topic 2), 316E.
