HIS 368D HIS 368D. Banned in Japan: Censored Art. 3 Hours.

Same as Asian Studies 351C. Focus on banned works of literature, painting, photography, film, and manga that encountered censorship in Japan from the early eighteenth century to today. Explore the censored texts in-depth alongside the sociopolitical contexts of their banning in order to understand how censorship worked historically and to help us consider how it works in our own time and place. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Only one of the following may be counted: Asian Studies 351C, 361 (Topic: Banned in Japan), History 368D. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.
