Topic 1: Indian Cinemas: Bollywood and Beyond. Focus on Indian cinema, primarily Hindi popular cinema--many times known as Bollywood. Examine major works of Hindi cinema and explore independent film making and regional cinema. Only one of the following may be counted: Asian Studies 320L, 361 (Topic: India Cin: Bollywood/Beyond), Radio-Television-Film 347F (Topic: India Cin: Bollywood/Beyond), (Topic 1). Topic 2: Cinematic Cities: Mumbai. Explore political, social, and artistic transformations of the global city of Mumbai from the early 20th into the 21st century using cinema as the primary text complemented by theoretical, creative, and historical readings. Only one of the following may be counted: Asian Studies 348G, 361 (Topic: Cinematic Cities: Mumbai), Radio-Television-Film 347F (Topic: Cinematic Cities: Mumbai), (Topic 2).
