Introduction to the sociology of punishment and the death penalty, the American model of criminal punishment, and contextualization of the United States system and critical analysis of penal systems in general. Special emphasis on the nature of penal control in contemporary America. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Sociology 307T and 308 (Topic: Punishment and Society) may not both be counted.
