GPS X01. Introduction to International Development.
Explore the ideational landscape of international development, including the main "schools of thought" in development over time, as well as how the beliefs and assumptions within these schools inform particular policy solutions. Analyze the institutional landscape with respect to the actors, organizations, and transnational communities that shape how global development has been practiced at the local, national and international levels. Examine the indicator landscape concerning where data on development can be found, interpreted and used to pursue evidence-based analysis and decision-making in this space. Survey contemporary development policy issues.
GPS X11D. Empirical Methods for Global Development.
Survey the various qualitative methods and tools used in the design and evaluation of programs and policies in international development and humanitarian assistance work. Analyze how to design and conduct qualitative evaluations in theory and under real-world constraints. Examine some of the key challenges in managing evaluations at the project and organizational levels, along with associated ethical and analytical concerns.
GPS X19S. Topics in Global Policy Studies.
This course is used to record credit the student earns while enrolled at another institution in a program administered by the University's Study Abroad Office. Credit is recorded as assigned by the study abroad adviser in the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. University credit is awarded for work in an exchange program; it may be counted as coursework taken in residence. Transfer credit is awarded for work in an affiliated studies program. May be repeated for credit when the topics vary.
