Requirements

To enter the doctoral degree program, all students must pass an early career review which focuses on their graduate coursework and their performance as teachers. Students must pass the review at the end of the spring semester of the second year of graduate study.

Students advance to candidacy for the doctoral degree after completing formal coursework, including the hours completed before the early career review; certifying their foreign language competency; and passing both the third year examination and the prospectus examination. Specific details about each requirement are available from the graduate advisor.

While the PhD program in English requires a minimum of 54 credit hours (42 hours of formal coursework, including a required first year methods course and a teaching practicum, plus six exam hours and six dissertation hours), 5-7 years of full-time study, or 96-138 credit hours, are usually required to complete program requirements. Program requirements include the aforementioned 42 hours of formal coursework (although additional coursework may be required to develop field expertise and gain professional development and publishing skills); additionally, exam and dissertation hours needed to fulfill degree requirements often significantly exceed the minimum six.
