The Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies (MALS) is comprised of faculty members whose teaching and research are at the forefront of innovation in multiple areas of study, including the following: borders, carcerality, class, culture, digital humanities, disability, diasporas, ethnicity, gender, immigration, indigeneity, language, performance, political participation, race, representation, and sexuality.

Requirements

The Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies does not currently accept applications for a terminal Master of Arts (MA) degree. Students are admitted under the presumption they will continue in the program through the PhD. All students entering the program must complete a minimum of 36 credit hours of coursework including two required courses: MAS X95C Theories in Mexican American and Latina/o Studies and MAS X95M Interpretive Methods. Students who complete these requirements and pass the PhD qualifying exam are eligible to apply for MA degree certification. Students who choose to leave the program after completing these requirements and/or students who do not pass the PhD qualifying exam must complete MAS X98R Master's Report, before MA degree certification.
