The PhD with concentration in media studies emphasizes critical, cultural, and contextual approaches to the study of media objects, industries, and cultures. Students in the program train in an interdisciplinary array of media studies methods centered in humanities-based approaches and in pedagogical and professional development. They gain competence in research and develop both a broad understanding of the field and in-depth knowledge of a specialized area.

Additional Requirements and Policies
The Master of Arts or an equivalent degree is required for admission to the doctoral degree program. The student works with a faculty advisor to plan specific course requirements in their area(s) of specialization and course hours in a supplemental specialization.
In addition to this coursework, the student must pass comprehensive examinations in three academic areas. After successful completion of the comprehensive examinations, the student files an application for candidacy and writes the dissertation.
