This degree prepares students to be social work scientists and to pursue careers as academicians and researchers. Students pursuing this degree design their own areas of study based on their academic and research interests.
The degree offers an interdisciplinary curriculum with emphasis on advanced research methods and statistics.

Admission
Applicants to this program must have a master’s degree from an accredited school of social work or a master's degree in a related discipline, a GPA of 3.0 or above in upper-division undergraduate courses, a graduate GPA of 3.0 or above, and completion of an undergraduate or graduate introductory statistics course with a minimum grade of B. International applicants from countries with a primary language other than English are to provide scores for TOEFL (minimum of 100, 25 in each section preferred). All applicants must show capacity for advanced academic work and potential for scholarship, demonstrate excellent and writing and analytic skills, and show evidence of research interests and capabilities

Requirements
Approval of the graduate advisor and course instructor is required for registration in any social work courses.
Students seeking the doctoral degree must complete the following requirements:

Completion of a program of coursework prescribed by the Graduate Studies Committee with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a grade of no less than “B” in any course.

Completion of a written comprehensive examination that tests the student’s knowledge of theory, research design and methodology in an area of concentration relevant to social work.

Six hours of dissertation, chosen from S W 399W, S W 699W, S W 999W.

Completion of an acceptable program of original research, including the submission of a dissertation that extends the knowledge base of social work.

Satisfactory performance on an oral examination in defense of the dissertation.
Students should consult the graduate advisor, graduate coordinator, or associate dean for doctoral education for additional information on program requirements.

Professional Liability Insurance
Professional liability insurance is required and a criminal background check may be required of all students enrolled in practicum placement or internship courses. The insurance policy must cover the duration of the course, beginning on or before the first regular class period.
