Explore the fraught and entangled histories of modern Japan and Korea as depicted in literature and film to consider experiences of imperialism, rapid modernization, war, decolonization, and trauma. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Only one of the following may be counted: Asian Studies 379 (Topic: His and Mem in Jpn and Korea), 379 (Topic 17), Comparative Literature 323G, History 341J. Prerequisite: For Asian studies majors, twelve semester hours of upper-division coursework in Asian studies; for others, upper-division standing.
