Survey poetry written in English from 1945 to the present. Examine how it has responded to and helped to shape the cultural and aesthetic questions of its times. Consider poetic movements and developments such as the so-called "middle generation," the Black Mountain School, the Beats, the San Francisco Renaissance, the New York School, Confessional poetry, Deep Image poetry, the Black Arts Movement, the Movement, Language writing, post-confessional lyric, hybrid poetics, and conceptual poetry, among others. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. English 346C and 371K may not both be counted. Prerequisite: Comparative Literature 315, English 303D, 316L, 316M, 316N, 316P, or Tutorial Course 303D.
