Survey poetry written in English from 1900 to 1945, including consideration of significant nineteenth-century precursors. Examine modern poetry's characteristic formal techniques, its preoccupations, and its key poets. Consider poetic movements and developments such as the "new" poetry, Georgian poetry, Regionalism, the poetry of World War I, Imagism, High Modernisms, so-called "Sentimental" Modernism, the New Criticism, the Harlem Renaissance, Documentary Poetry, and Objectivism, among others. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. English 354P and 371K may not both be counted. Prerequisite: Comparative Literature 315, English 303D, 316L, 316M, 316N, 316P, or Tutorial Course 303D.
