Explore the global reach of the Catholic Church before modernity. Examine the tension between the local and the "universal" church, that is, how encounter, religious devotion, and political power were shaped by local circumstances as well as global connections. Analyze recent scholarship, texts, artwork, and objects made by early modern people who shaped Catholicism in this period. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. History 325C and 366N (Topic: World Catholicism 1400-1800) may not both be counted. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.
