Examine the development of the culture of hip hop in Latin America. Utilize a variety of materials including rap lyrics, graffiti, urban muralism, break dance, sound design, and entrepreneurship to discuss media and migratory factors of hip hop expansion in the region; the notions of youth culture conveyed by these expressions; aesthetic debates around hip hop; the public intervention of hip hop groups and their political influence. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Prerequisite: One of the following: Spanish 327C, 327N, 327V (or 327W), 328C, or 330L.
