Professional training in educational psychology relates human cognition, affect and behavior to the educational process as it occurs in the home and in peer groups, nursery school through graduate school, professional education, business and industry, the military, healthcare, and other settings.
This program involves concentration in one of four program areas: human development, culture and learning science; quantitative methods; or the professional areas of counseling psychology or school/clinical child psychology. Students in the concentrations of counseling psychology and school/clinical child psychology are required to complete additional training that can support certification or licensure.

Requirements
Depending on the concentration chosen, between 56 and 90 semester hours of credit are required. Students in all concentrations are required to complete core coursework in educational psychology, concentration coursework, and supporting coursework outside the department. Students in the counseling psychology and school/clinical child psychology concentrations are required to complete additional training in the form of practicums and internship. All PhD concentrations require completion of a dissertation. Required credit hours of coursework vary per concentration. Time to complete the degree varies, but it is typical for students to complete the quantitative methods and human development, culture and learning sciences specializations in 4-5 years, and the counseling and school/clinical psychology specializations in 6 years.
Review and Examination Requirements:
Qualifying Examination: Prior to applying to doctoral candidacy, the student must pass a qualifying examination according to guidelines established by the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC) in Educational Psychology.
Dissertation: The dissertation must represent an independent scholarly investigation of a problem pertinent to the field of educational psychology, and constitute a scholarly contribution to the body of knowledge in the profession.
Annual Review: Each year while in the program, the faculty in the area of specialization will assess the student’s progress and performance as part of an annual review process.
