A Master of Fine Arts is available in two areas of specialization -- film and media production and screenwriting. The MFA programs are designed for the student with a demonstrated commitment to production or screenwriting as a professional, artistic, or academic pursuit.

The MFA program in Screenwriting is a two-year (including one summer) program, designed for creative individuals with a strong commitment to storytelling for the screen. The program provides a foundation of narrative skills that enables writers to succeed in both film and television, in either the Hollywood or independent arenas. The program also offers a wide variety of electives in production, media studies and industry to further inform the craft of screenwriting.

Requirements

Students write original feature screenplays, TV specs, and pilots. In addition to their core writing workshops, students enroll in required courses in Film History and Development for Screenwriters. During their final semester, MFA candidates enroll in RTF 398R Master's Report, to write their thesis script and report. In that course, in addition to the master's report, students will complete their thesis script which is a substantial rewrite of an original work -- either a feature or television pilot -- developed during earlier semesters.
