Research in media history, criticism, and theory is supported by the resources of the University Libraries, the Research and Collections Division of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, and the Harry Ransom Center, a major collection of primary materials in literature, film, and the arts. Students with a focus in global media have available to them the nationally recognized resources of the Benson Latin American Collection, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, and the South Asia Institute, among other facilities.

Areas of Study

Master of Arts. The Master of Arts with concentration in media studies emphasizes critical, cultural, and contextual approaches to the study of media objects, industries, and cultures. The MA degree program prepares students for doctoral study in media studies, or for advanced work in adjacent career fields. It is designed as a two-year program. Students complete a thesis on the academic track or a master's report, which may include applied research or a creative project, on the professional track.

Master of Fine Arts. A Master of Fine Arts is available in two areas of specialization -- film and media production and screenwriting. The MFA programs are designed for the student with a demonstrated commitment to production or screenwriting as a professional, artistic, or academic pursuit.

The three-year MFA in Film Production program covers all production craft specialties, with a strong focus on directing and the art of storytelling. The curriculum equally emphasizes fiction and nonfiction, encouraging students to explore diverse cinematic forms. This blend of narrative and documentary education equips graduate filmmakers with the adaptability and skills to approach stories from unique perspectives and to support new kinds of stories.

The MFA program in Screenwriting is a two-year (including one summer) program, designed for creative individuals with a strong commitment to storytelling for the screen. The program provides a foundation of narrative skills that enables writers to succeed in both film and television, in either the Hollywood or independent arenas. The program also offers a wide variety of electives in production, media studies and industry to further inform the craft of screenwriting.

Doctor of Philosophy: The PhD with concentration in media studies emphasizes critical, cultural, and contextual approaches to the study of media objects, industries, and cultures. Students in the program train in an interdisciplinary array of media studies methods centered in humanities-based approaches and in pedagogical and professional development. They gain competence in research and develop both a broad understanding of the field and in-depth knowledge of a specialized area.
