Same as European Studies 346 (Topic 44) and Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies 335 (Topic 30). Learn how technologies and social changes shape each other. Use case studies from Eastern Europe and Russia from the Industrial Revolution to the Era of AI. Explore the industrialization of production and consumption, the professionalization of engineering, the emergence of multidivisional industrial enterprises, the relationship between humans and machines, the uses of "cheap nature", and technological utopianism. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Only one of the following may be counted: European Studies 346 (Topic 44), History 361V, Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies 335 (Topic 30). Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.
