Humanities

Major

Forty-two semester hours, including at least 30 hours of upper-division coursework, arranged by contract in consultation with the humanities advisor. None of these 42 hours may be counted toward the core curriculum or the prescribed work for the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Students normally enter the program in the sophomore or junior year. Only external transfer students may enter UT directly as Humanities majors. Students new to the major consult with the advisor and take HMN 102T Design A Path to define their objectives, central subject areas, and a general plan of study in accordance with the student's interests. Then, as juniors, students take HMN 104 Introduction to Humanities Honors Research to plan their thesis project.

With the approval of the humanities advisor, the student chooses one of the following tracks:

  1. Track One
    1. Nine semester hours in a single field of study in the College of Liberal Arts
    2. Nine hours in one or more other fields of study in the College of Liberal Arts
    3. Nine hours in any field or fields outside the College of Liberal Arts
    4. Nine additional hours in any field or fields at the University
    5. Six hours of upper-division honors coursework including either Humanities 370 and a three-hour upper-division LAH or HMN course, or HMN 368H and HMN 369H.
  2. Track Two
    1. Twelve semester hours in a single field of study in the College of Liberal Arts
    2. Nine hours in a second field of study in the College of Liberal Arts
    3. Fifteen additional hours in any field or fields at the University
    4. Six hours of upper-division honors coursework including either Humanities 370 and a three-hour upper-division LAH or HMN course, or HMN 368H and HMN 369H.

Students must complete HMN 368H and HMN 369H with A-s or higher in both halves to earn departmental honors.
