EDU 321. Play in Early Childhood Development.
Examine the theoretical and empirical bases for observing children in play; cognitive, social, and communicative stages related to developmental theory; children's adjustment related to social and emotional theories; and motivational value of play. EDU 325. Second Language Acquisition.
Examine children or adults' acquisition of English as a second language. Discuss simultaneous acquisition of two languages, adding a second language, language processing, order of acquisition, and the role of the first language. Three lecture hours a week for one semester, with field hours to be arranged. Only one of the following may be counted: Applied Learning and Development 325, 329, Education 325, 329. Prerequisite: Three semester hours of coursework in psychology.
EDU 327. Sociocultural Influences on Learning.
Discuss human learning in multisocial, multilingual, and multicultural contexts; realities of society and their impact on learning; and social concerns such as prejudice, stereotyping, cross-cultural attitudes, bilingual issues, and parent and community involvement. Three lecture hours a week for one semester, with field hours to be arranged. Only one of the following may be counted: African and African Diaspora Studies 352F, 372D (Topic 2), Applied Learning and Development 327, Education 327, Mexican American Studies 374 (Topic: Sociocultural Influences on Learning). Prerequisite: Three semester hours of coursework in psychology.
EDU 327G. Education, Culture and Diversity.
Explore a comparative analysis of human learning in multisocial, multilingual, and multicultural contexts in the United States and Latin America. Discuss social concerns such as prejudice, stereotyping, cross-cultural attitudes, bilingual issues, and parent and community involvement. Examine transnationalism and immigration in the United States from Central America and Mexico. The equivalent of three lecture hours a week for one semester. Applied Learning and Development 327G and Education 327G may not both be counted.
EDU 328. Applied Human Learning.
Explore development, cognition, language, and sociocultural influences in learning contexts, child assessment, identification of learning styles, and tests and measurements. Utilize fieldwork to provide a theoretical basis for professional assessment, referral, and placement. Three lecture hours a week for one semester, with fieldwork to be arranged. Applied Learning and Development 328 and Education 328 may not both be counted. Prerequisite: Admission to the professional development sequence of the Bachelor of Science in Education degree program.
EDU 329. Acquisition of Language and Literacies.
Discuss initial language and literacy acquisition theory; second language acquisition theory; relations among first and additional languages in literacy and language acquisition; home, school, and learners' perspectives; and current issues in literacy and multilingual classrooms. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Additional fieldwork hours may be required. Only one of the following may be counted: Applied Learning and Development 325, 329, Education 325, 329. Prerequisite: Education 327 or 327G.
EDU 329G. Acquisition of Language and Literacies in the United States and Latin America.
Explore the theory and practice of language acquisition in cross-cultural contexts in Latin America and the United States. Discuss the instruction of English as a second language, social justice for bilingual learners and speakers of minority languages, and connections to multilingual communities. Examine language and immigration issues in the United States and Latin America. The equivalent of three lecture hours a week for one semester. Applied Learning and Development 329G and Education 329G may not both be counted.
EDU 330. Language in Education.
Explore theoretical and practical perspectives on the nature of language in education, with a focus on implications for English language learners in classroom settings; linguistic structures and functions; discourse, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics across languages and throughout development; and language varieties. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Additional fieldwork hours may be required. Applied Learning and Development 330 and Education 330 may not both be counted. EDU 331. Restorative Practices.
Focus on community engagement and social justice issues related to schooling access and equity. Three lecture hours per week for one semester. Applied Learning and Development 331 and Education 331 may not both be counted. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.
EDU 333. Children's Literature.
Introduction to ways of bringing literature to children, facilitated by extensive discussion. Discuss literature written for children from early childhood through age twelve. Explore genres, authors, themes, and forms. Three lecture hours a week for one semester, with field hours to be arranged.
