Using press coverage of historical and contemporary court cases and trials of women ranging from Angela Davis to Marissa Alexander, explores how media shapes public and popular perceptions of race, class, gender, sexuality, and the law. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Only one of the following may be counted: African and African Diaspora Studies 350F, 374D (Topic: Black Women on Trial), History 350R (Topic: Black Women on Trial), 350R (Topic 40), Women's and Gender Studies 340 (Topic: Black Women on Trial), 340 (Topic 69). Prerequisite: Upper-division standing and six semester hours of coursework in history.
