Same as Middle Eastern Studies 386 (Topic 21). Explore how Arabic literature and thought changed over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries through extended studies of poetry and prose written in Arabic. Examine the relationship of modernity to modernist literature in order to define what modernism means in an Arab/ic context. Three lecture hours a week for one semester.
