Examine the motivations for migration; settlement patterns; construction of identity through traditions and festivals; German American's economic, social, and cultural contributions to the United States; and challenges to assimilation. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Only one of the following may be counted: American Studies 360D, German, Scandinavian, and Dutch Studies 360 (Topic: German-Amer Immigratn/Ethn), 362E, History 357Q. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.
